[Image taken 3.4.22] Woodfield Road close to the junction with Poplar Way, Harrogate. Context: #173018. This drop kerb was installed in September 2021. It had taken from 2018 or possibly before. I met a ward councillor and exchanged many emails with Paul Haslam the North Yorks county councillor for Bilton and Nidd Gorge. It was North Yorks that paid for it. Its purpose? To enable people in wheelchairs/mobility scooters to be able to cross this access road to get to/from the shops or anywhere on this side of Woodfield Road directly. Previously they crossed to the side the image was taken using drop kerbs then crossed back again. Not only did this take time but it was hazardous. Speeds on Woodfield Road are high. The standard of driving behaviour is not good. The drop kerb also benefits people with buggies, people with a shopping trolley or wheeled luggage, children on balance bikes... and any cyclist wanting to visit the Chinese takeaway, the convenience shop or the cafe. Now you can make a turn into the access road and push up the dropped kerb... instead of trying to turn into the car parking area - usually full. Alas, despite much effort I have failed to manage to contact the landowner. I wanted to make the case for him/her to install cycle parking on their curtilage. But I am stoked about the dropped kerb. It benefits very many people. And will continue to do so.
